This weekend @skitaos we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Ben Meyers @ridgeathon — hiking-to-ski West Basin and Highline Ridges (and why not Kachina?!) to raise funds for the Emergency Medicine Fund of the @taoscommunityfoundation.

Our community is built on grit, altitude, and heart — and this tradition pushes us a little higher each year so critical emergency care in Northern New Mexico can go further. Sign up’s still open at raisetheridge.org!

Leading into the weekend, that same spirit carries into tomorrow, Thursday, February 19 at 4:30pm, in the Taos Tent with @davehahn.climb’s slide show-and-tell.

David Hahn is one of the most accomplished high-altitude climbers in the world, with 15 summits of Mount Everest — more than any non-Sherpa climber in history — and decades of guiding experience from Alaska to Antarctica. As a longtime member of the Taos Ski Patrol, we’re lucky to call him one of our own.

As he told @taosnews, the mountains here still deliver the challenge he’s looking for — not just the Himalaya or Antarctica, but right here at Taos. Expect lessons on perseverance, teamwork, and decision-making in extreme environments — plus a healthy dose of inspiration.

@fieldinstituteoftaos, there’s one guiding principle: play outside. #FITaos has spent 30 years helping kids find confidence, connection, and belonging in wild places including our very own #TaosSkiValley— it’s not just where life happens… it’s where lives are changed!

We get to hear from founder @soozle_fiore and her indomitable team in a new short film by Lara Davis being screened tonight at the Backcountry Film Festival (6-9:30pm @daleeektaos), about how this idea born from a love of the great outdoors has grown into something so much greater than the sum of its @fitaos__bikes parts!

“When you’re out in nature, it’s so hands on,” Susie explains. “When [the kids] feel that, then they care — and then they want to protect and preserve all that beauty and life that’s out there. It’s not school. It’s just fun. And it’s not like, ‘We’re going to go for a hike.’ It’s like, ‘We’re gonna go up this trail and see what we find.’”

Summer camps, school partnerships (K–12), after-school bike clubs, MTB teams, Rio Fernando camps, leadership programs, and community rides — all designed to nurture curiosity, resilience, and a love of the outdoors. Summer programs are open to all campers, and during the school year FITaos partners with local K–12 schools. Scholarships and sliding-scale support are available, and no child is turned away for inability to pay.

It’s about time

🌄🏔️🎿🎨🐐📷

Whether in snow, paint, or film, Kachina Peak has left a lasting impression across generations, no matter what the medium of expression, since Ernie Blake first flew over it in his Cessna in the 1950s. Our 12,481‑foot crown jewel of Taos Ski Valley is now open @skitaos for hike-only, with each first summit of the season an annual pilgrimage meaningful to so many in our community!

Long before lifts supplanted hiking as the primary means of ascent, Blake and early ski pioneers tackled steep fall lines with precision and respect for the terrain. Those same fundamentals — balance, patience, reading snow, honoring line — still guide movement across Kachina today. Legacy is earned, step by step and turn by turn.

Like @Taos and our magical light, Kachina itself has long inspired artists. @woodallfineart’s oil paintings and thick brushstrokes distill the mountain into bold color fields bound by light and shadow into essential, evocative forms. Gus Foster’s panoramic photography, exhibited @harwoodmuseum, expands that vision. Using antique large-format cameras, innovative darkroom techniques, and Billie goat-hauling equipment up the mountain, Foster created some of the first sweeping compositions of Northern New Mexico’s now legendary ridge lines. His images preserve the mountain’s scale, echoing the physical and spiritual ascent of Kachina.

Foster and Woodall’s work ensure these landscapes endure; that Kachina Peak’s terrain remains both teacher and canvas — a place where legends converge!

This two-day event invites skiers to experience modern telemark skis, bindings, and boots at the Resort Upper Plaza by Lift 1 — whether you’re tele-curious or fully free-heel committed.

📖 Telemark skiing traces back to mid-1800s Norway, where ski pioneer Sondre Norheim refined the telemark turn and helped shape early ski design — sidecut, bindings, and technique that still influence skiing today. With the heel free and the body in motion, the telemark turn is equal parts strength, balance, and flow — part dance, part mountain meditation.

Built by skiers drawn to steep lines, technical terrain, and soulful skiing, Taos has always valued craft over convenience and skill over shortcuts.
