6th Annual Dennis Hopper Day and the 50th Anniversary of “Easy Rider”
Taos celebrates the life and times of Hollywood’s rebel icon, Dennis Hopper, with the 6th annual Dennis Hopper Day in Taos, New Mexico. Dennis Hopper Day 2019 will feature the Easy Rider Rally & Ride, Village Market & Fair, Buffalo BBQ (catered by Tiwa Kitchen of Taos Pueblo), Rebel Film Festival, and Hopper’s 83rd Birthday Commemoration and Music Celebration.
This years festivities and celebrations will commence on Friday, May 17 (Hopper’s 83rd Birthday) at 7pm with the Rebel Film Festival’s 50th Anniversary screening of “Easy Rider” at the Taos Center for the Arts (TCA). Famous scenes from Hopper’s iconic counter-culture classic were shot in Taos, including Taos Pueblo, Taos Old County Jail, Stagecoach Hot Springs, and the ﬁelds of sagebrush behind the Dennis Hopper Day host hotel, the Sagebrush Inn & Suites.
In the tradition of Mabel Dodge Luhan’s legendary parlor gatherings, the “Easy Rider” screening will be followed by a celebration of Hopper’s 83rd birthday in the Encore Gallery at the TCA with a custom Hopper cake made by ORALE! Gallery and will offer an opportunity for friends to share stories and legends of Dennis Hopper. The Rebel Film Festival continues with a Post-Party at the Sagebrush Cantina.
On Saturday, May 18, motorcycles, choppers, friends and fans will gather at 10am at the Sagebrush Inn for the Easy Rider Rally & Ride, Village Market & Fair, and Buffalo BBQ. Built in 1931, the Sagebrush Inn has hosted a list of notable guests that include: Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Newman, Ansel Adams, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, Danny DeVito, Arnold Schwarzenegger, President Gerald Ford, and R.C. Gorman whose artwork can be found throughout the hotel (and even in the floor).
The Village Market opens its doors to the public from 10am until 7pm. Meet artisans and wild-crafters from Taos Pueblo and neighboring communities while enjoying Northern New Mexican cuisine offered by the Sagebrush concession stand. Entry to the Village Market is free of charge, and offers a chance to win a Pueblo Balloon hot air balloon ride.
Kickstands are up at 1pm for the Easy Rider Ride along Northern New Mexico’s Enchanted
Circle with a stop at the famous Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and historic Taos Pueblo. Registered bikers will receive an offcial Dennis Hopper Day Easy Rider Ride embroidered patch at the event. The Buffalo BBQ catered by Tiwa Kitchen, begins at 4pm and the Post-Party Music Celebration begins at 7pm in the Sagebrush Cantina, featuring music, dance, spirits, hand rolled cigars, and more.
On Sunday, May 19, there will be a Hopper Brunch at the Sagebrush Grill beginning at 10am followed by a 2pm matinee of Dennis’ controversial and misunderstood masterpiece, “The Last Movie” at the TCA.
Taos shops, galleries and restaurants will be open and celebrating Dennis Hopper Day. Restaurants that Hopper favored, will be serving up Hopper’s favorite cuisine throughout the weekend.
