Spring Adventures Abound at Taos Ski Valley

Spring Break is here, and it's one of the most exciting times of the year in Taos Ski Valley! The snowpack is deep and the days are getting brighter and warmer. Skiing and snowboarding in the New Mexico sun this time of year is awesome, there is nothing quite like shredding the soft spring snow while working on an epic goggle tan. An energetic buzz fills the air as the mountain lights up with happy shredders and good vibes. It isn't all just about the skiing though, cool places to kick back and relax or enjoy the excitement of mountain adventure can be found all around Taos, on and off the snow.

While you've made your way to the mountains, whether you drove or booked a flight on the newly founded Taos Air, take some time to enjoy the views and soak in the scene. On mountain we have a trove of amazing hangouts to enjoy between runs. One of our favorites is the newly remodeled Bavarian deck, set on the sunny side of the resort by Lift 4 you can ski right to the steps. On a warm spring day the deck is filled with happy skiers enjoying the amazing food and German style beer, the pretzels are quickly becoming an iconic snack and we've heard a couple people say they keep coming back to Taos to hang out at the Bav! Back to the front of the mountain, if you're skiing the steeps or cruising the groomers and need a break head over to the St. Bernard deck at the base of Lift 1. Follow the alluring smells of green chile and cheeseburgers on the grill, fresh portabella sandwhiches and other unique delicacies and grab a beverage to wash it down as you watch skiers and riders shred the steeps on Al's Run and Showdown. The deck is facing the sun during the early afternoon and it's quite a scene, music fills the air and it seems like the party never stops here! Of course you may not want to step off the mountain slopes to refuel or relax, check out The Whistlestop Cafe between the top of Lift 1 and bottom of Lift 2. The snow deck here is perfect for a quick stop to grab a bite to eat and a tasty beverage, with views of the slopes from the bright hand-painted Zia chairs you can soak in the sun and be ready to hit the slopes again in no time.

As you're out hitting the slopes we're sure you're going to have some memorable experiences to reflect on later, Cold Smoke Photography can capture some of these moments,. Look for their yellow banners and photographers with the blue jackets. Their crew of creative photographers who love skiing really know how to liven up your best style and match it with a gorgeous mountain scene (which there are plenty of here!) and create a magical piece of artwork featuring you and your family or friends that you'll love showing your compadres who weren't here! Swing by their headquarters on Thunderbird Road for specifics about locations and print options.

Of course, besides all the on-mountain fun, the area in and around Taos is full of awesome adventures and things to do! There are some iconic places always worth visiting, like the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge along Highway 64. Situated within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument you can experience sweeping views in every direction of the high desert mesa, Sangre de Cristo Mountains and of course the mighty Rio Grande flowing through the gorge several hundred feet below. The adjoining BLM rest stop has picnic tables and restrooms and a short hike down the West Rim Trail brings you to some beautiful views. This trail is also a beginner-friendly bike trail; when it's dry (usually a day or two after a snowstorm) you can enjoy the views via bicycle! Gearing Up Bicycle Shop in Taos can get you set up with a rental bike and anything else (including snacks) to enjoy a casual ride on the trail.

The views of the Rio Grande are truly amazing, especially from high in the sky in a hot air balloon - Pueblo Balloon Company offers rides year round, the perfect way to celebrate special occasions with friends, family or when romance is in the air! We can only begin to describe the experience of floating high above the mesa, then dipping down into the gorge to kiss the rio as if flows gently towards the Gulf of Mexico. After one of the most thrilling balloon rides anywhere in the West, celebrate with the traditional post-flight champagne knowing the memories of this adventure will last a lifetime!

The Rio Grande has been the center of Taos culture for centuries. It's a truly magnificent geologic wonder that has sustained life here for a long, long time. It's definitely worth visiting on your trip. To do so we would recommend considering something special about Taos, this is one of the few places on Earth that you can ski and go whitewater rafting in the same day! Rafting season begins during March, temps are rising and the water is too. New Mexico River Adventures is offering deals for Spring Break on some of their most popular trips.
