Mountain Biking

In all the world of mountain biking, Taos New Mexico is a familiar name that conjures up thoughts of epic bicycling in the mountains. Images of dashing along on rolling single track through white aspen trunks that support golden leaves quaking in the bright sunlight come to mind. Around the next corner could be a side hill trail above tree line with views you just have to stop and gaze into the far distance to absorb.

This playground extends well above tree line in Taos Ski Valley. The world renowned ski area is also becoming well known for extreme mountain biking. With elevation changes that make your heart pump for joy, the rewards of the effort are heart stopping views and sick downhills.

Northside at Taos Ski Valley offers the majority of riding in the ski valley. This self-guided fee-based mountain biking area is on 1,200 acres of private recreational development. As a mapped and signed trail system designed especially for mountain biking, Northside is a looped trail network with spectacular overlooks, single and double track routes through pines, aspen, and meadows. For the more adventurous, one can pedal to the top of 12,163 ft. Frazer Mountain, the highest point on the property.

Northside is open from late June through October, weather permitting. Access permits are for sale at the Taos Ski Valley Chamber Visitor Center, Alpine Village Suites, Columbine Inn, and Edelweiss Condos. Permits are also sold in Taos at Gearing Up and Taos Cyclery. For those that prefer to stick to the village roads and less challenging climbs, one can ride a four to five mile loop around the valley on Kachina Road to Kachina Village, then enjoy an all downhill ride back to the main base area, all for free, just rent or bring a bike.

After the ride, relax and refuel with some great food and brews available right in Taos Ski Valley. Shop a little then take a relaxing ride up the chairlift.
